About Beatriz
Beatriz P. Lorente is a lecturer in the Language and Communication Centre of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Nanyang Technological University. She has a PhD in Linguistics from the National University of Singapore (NUS), an MA in Linguistics from Ohio University and an MA in English (Literary and Cultural Studies) from the Ateneo de Manila University. She has been the recipient of various fellowships and awards including a President's Graduate Fellowship from NUS and a Fulbright Graduate Fellowship. Her PhD dissertation, "Mapping English linguistic capital: the case of Filipino domestic workers in Singapore", was the inaugural winner of the Wang Gungwu Medal and Prize for best PhD thesis in the humanities and social sciences in NUS for AY 2006-2007. Her main research interests are in language and migration, language policy and planning and global Englishes. She is also interested in the intersections between sociolinguistics and language teaching.
