About Huang Hoon

Chng Huang Hoon received her PhD (Linguistics) from the University of Texas at Austin, USA. She is an Associate Professor teaching in the Department of English Language & Literature, National University of Singapore. She teaches critical discourse analysis, feminist theory and feminist discourse. Her research interests are centred on Asian engagements with global/western feminist practice, language, law, gender and discourse. Her recent publications include the book, "Separate and Unequal: Judicial Rhetoric and Women’s Rights" (2002, John Benjamins); and several articles and book chapters, including "Looking to East and West: Feminist Practice in an Asian Classroom" (2003, with Chitra Sankaran), in Fractured Feminisms: Rhetoric, Context, and Contestation, Laura Gray-Rosendale & Gil Harootunian (eds), SUNY Press, New York; "'We women aren't free to die': Transacting Asian sexualities in a feminism classroom in Singapore" (2004, with Chitra Sankaran), in Critical Asian Studies, Vol. 36:2, Routledge, New York. She has also written the following articles on teaching methods: "'I teach to watch the lights come on': Reflections on Best Practices" (2005), Special Issue: CDTL Brief; "From classroom to life: Empowering students through collaborative teaching and learning" (2005), in Innovative Approaches to University Teaching & Learning, CDTL, NUS; and "Cultivating Student Ownership and Independence Through Collaborative Teaching and Learning" (2003), in Ideas on Teaching, CDTL: NUS, Vol. 2. She also serves as an Assistant Dean within the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, National University of Singapore.
