About Lawrence
Dr Lawrence J. Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the English Language and Literature Academic Group, National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore. He has been working mainly with pre-service student-teachers and in-service English Language teachers by teaching a variety of BA, PGDE and MA courses such as Understanding Reading, Reading and Writing Methods, Psycholinguistics and Research Methods. Although his teaching spans several programmes at NIE, his research and writing interests lie in language processing, learner strategies, metacognition, self-regulated learning in learner self-management and language teacher education, with a particular focus on the effects of pedagogical interventions on students’ reading and writing improvement in school. He has published in international journals and presented keynote addresses at international conferences on these topics. He is currently engaged in a large-scale research project funded by the Singapore Ministry of Education, which investigates the effects of strategy-based instruction on reading and writing improvement that involves six primary schools in Singapore. He has brought with him various working experiences in different countries such as China, USA, and Singapore, which, he hopes will help him to work more closely with SAAL members from other institutions.
