Conferment of AILA Honorary Membership for A/Professor Anne Pakir
It is with immense pride that SAAL is announcing the AILA Executive Board and International Committee’s (EBIC) decision to award our longest serving past President (1990-2004) A/Professor Anne Pakir with the prestigious AILA Honorary Membership which, to date, has only 6 honorary members who are true international luminaries in the field of Applied Linguistics. AILA Honorary Membership is conferred to those who have made outstanding contributions to AILA or to the field of Applied Linguistics. We are glowing with pride that Prof Pakir joins this esteemed list placing Singapore and SAAL firmly in the global league of AILA.

A/Professor Anne Pakir has served both the local and international Applied Linguistics community with passion, dedication and commitment. In 2002, she was Chair of the AILA 13th World Congress held in Singapore which saw an attendance of 1500 delegates from all over the world with 12 keynote and featured addresses, 900 paper and poster sessions, 65 symposia, and 18 scientific commissions. In 2010, she was conferred an honorary lifelong membership by the Singapore Association for Applied Linguistics (SAAL) for outstanding contribution to the association as its President for 14 years from 1990-2004 and for bringing the International Conference of Applied Linguistics to Singapore in 2002. In 2015, she was conferred the inaugural Singapore Association for Applied Linguistics (SAAL) Mentoring Medal of Honour, for her inspirational work in nurturing the next generation of Applied Linguists for Singapore. For her dedication, commitment and service to the Applied Linguistics community locally and internationally, the AILA EBIC has decided to award A/Prof Anne Pakir with the AILA Honorary Membership award.
Please note that the public announcement of the award will be made at the 2017 AILA Congress, to be held in Rio de Janeiro from 23-28 July 2017. We encourage as many of you to attend AILA 2017 as possible. Permission has been granted by AILA President Claire Kramsch to announce this publicly to our SAAL membership ahead of the awards ceremony.
